Breast asymmetry surgery

It is perfectly normal to have a slight difference between the two breasts: almost all women have some degree of natural asymmetry. However, when the difference in size, shape or position is more evident, it can lead to self-consciousness, difficulty in choosing clothes and discomfort when exposed.

Breast asymmetry surgery is aimed at balancing the appearance of both breasts to achieve aesthetic harmony and thus improve confidence and quality of life. At HC Aesthetic we understand that no two asymmetries are alike: each case requires personalised planning and, often, the combination of different techniques in each breast to ensure the best result.

Most common causes of breast asymmetry

Breast asymmetry can be caused by a wide variety of factors and can manifest itself at different times in life. Understanding the cause is essential in order to select the most appropriate surgical technique and achieve a balanced and natural-looking result. Among the most common reasons are:

Uneven development during adolescence

One breast develops faster or grows more than the other.

Changes after pregnancy or breastfeeding

One breast loses more volume or sags more than the other.

After-effects of previous breast surgery

Augmentation, reduction or mastopexy with uneven results.

Lesions due to breast disease

Whether benign or malignant

Surgical options to correct breast asymmetry

  • Augmentation of one breast: with implant, lipofilling or both.
  • Reduction of one breast: to make the larger breast equal to the smaller one.
  • Bilateral asymmetric augmentation: implants of different size or projection to achieve balance.
  • Unilateral or bilateral mastopexy: to equalise height and firmness.
  • Areola repositioning: to align the nipple-areola complex.

Tailored planned breast asymmetry surgery

It is very important to make a thorough initial assessment and examination, as in many cases, the plan will include different procedures for each breast. This evaluation is mainly based on:

Complete medical history.

Measurements of volume, height, projection and position of areolas.

Evaluation of skin elasticity and thoracic symmetry.

Surgical plan tailored to the needs of each breast.

What to expect after breast asymmetry correction

After breast asymmetry surgery, it is normal to have questions. Addressing these doubts clearly allows the patient to understand the process and make decisions with complete peace of mind.

    • Hospital stay: usually 24 hours.
    • Discomfort: mild to moderate, well controlled with oral analgesia.
    • Return to work: generally, within 1–2 weeks.
    • Physical activity: avoid strenuous exercise and intense sport for 4-6 weeks.

The type and location depend on the technique used:

    • Minimal and well hidden in simple augmentations.
    • Periareolar, vertical or inverted T-shaped scars if mastopexy or reduction is required. In all cases scars are carefully managed from day one with protocols to optimise their evolution and make them as discreet as possible.

Although infrequent, they may include:

    • Haematomas or seromas.
    • Temporary alterations in sensitivity.
    • Visible scarring.
    • Partial persistence of asymmetry, especially if the initial difference was very noticeable.
    • Balance in size, shape and height between both breasts.
    • Improved body harmony.
    • Greater comfort with clothes and increased confidence in one's appearance.
    • Final results are visible after 3-6 months, when the scars have softened and the tissue has settled.
    • Long-lasting results, provided a stable weight is maintained and there are no major changes such as pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions about breast asymmetry

We answer the most common questions we are asked in consultation, to help you resolve your doubts.

    Is perfect symmetry always achieved?

The aim is to bring both breasts as close as possible in size, shape and position. In some cases, the natural tissue may limit absolute symmetry, but the residual difference is usually minimal and barely noticeable.

Can I also improve the shape at the same time?

Yes. Asymmetry surgery is an opportunity not only to equalise volume, but also to improve the shape, firmness and projection of both breasts.
