Breast reduction surgery
Breast reduction is a procedure that not only transforms the aesthetics of the breast, but also significantly improves quality of life. Excessively large breasts (macromastia) can cause back, neck and shoulder pain, skin irritations, difficulty in doing exercise and low self-esteem.
The aim of this procedure is to reduce breast volume and weight, improve their shape and proportion, and reposition the nipple-areola complex to achieve a more harmonious and lighter breast.
Breast reduction is indicated in patients whose breast hypertrophy causes functional discomfort, postural alterations or significant aesthetic changes. Among the most common situations are:
-
- Cervical, dorsal or lumbar pain associated with breast weight.
- Skin irritation or infections under the breast (intertrigo).
- Shoulder grooves caused by bra use.
- Limitation to perform physical activity.
- Postural problems.
- Desire to improve the aesthetics of large, sagging breasts.

Breast volume and degree of sagging
Key factors in determining the surgical approach.
Skin quality and breast symmetry
Influence the final outcome and the choice of scar pattern.
Preservation of breastfeeding
May be more limited in extensive reductions.
Size expectations
Essential to avoid unnatural results.
Scarring in breast reduction surgery
Scars are necessary and strategic. The surgery involves not only removing tissue, but also reshaping the breast and tightening the skin to achieve an aesthetically pleasing and long-lasting result.
-
- Inverted T-scar: the most common, combining a scar around the areola, a vertical line towards the intermammary cleft and another in the inframammary fold.
- Vertical: for moderate reductions, without the full horizontal line.
-
- Allow precise and safe removal of excess skin.
- Help to better define the shape and projection of the breast.
- Facilitate stable repositioning of the nipple-areola complex.
Over months, most scars become fine and minimally visible, while the relief of physical discomfort and aesthetic improvement remain in the long-term.
-
- Meticulous surgical closure.
- · Silicone dressings or gels.
- Massage and specific creams once the skin allows.
- Strict sun protection during the first year.

What to expect after breast reduction
After breast reduction surgery, the recovery process, the possible risks and the evolution of the results are a natural part of the treatment.
-
- Hospital stay: 24-48 hours.
- Drains: usually not required.
- Discomfort: controlled with painkillers.
- Return to work: 2–3 weeks, depending on the type of activity.
- Exercise: avoid strenuous activity for 4–6 weeks.
- Postoperative bra: continuous use during the first month.
Most are mild and resolve with medical treatment or minor corrections. Although rare, the following may occur:
-
- Haematomas o seromas.
- Temporary or permanent alterations in sensation.
- Scars that are more visible than usual.
- Minor asymmetries in shape or size.
- Difficulty or inability to breastfeed.
- Partial necrosis of the areola or nipple (rare, more likely in very large reductions or in smokers).
-
- Immediate relief of physical discomfort related to breast weight.
- Improved posture and mobility.
- Lighter, firmer and more proportionate breasts.
- Final results are visible after 3-6 months, when the scars have softened and the tissue has settled.
- Aesthetic, functional and long-lasting results, as long as a stable weight is maintained.

Frequently asked questions about breast reduction
We understand that breast reduction is a decision that can change your quality of life. Here we answer the most frequently asked questions about the procedure so that you can take this step with complete certainty and confidence.
Yes, during the initial consultation we study your wishes and body proportions. You can choose a volume that you feel comfortable with, as long as it is technically feasible and compatible with safe vascularisation of the tissue.
Our goal is to achieve a breast that is not only smaller, but also maintains a natural, firm shape that is in balance with your overall silhouette.
It is common to experience changes in nipple sensation (increased or decreased) during the first few months due to tissue manipulation. In most cases, sensation returns progressively. However, in very extensive breast reductions or cases of gigantomastia, there is a risk of permanent loss of sensation. During the pre-operative assessment, the surgeon will explain the most appropriate technique to minimise this risk.
As with any surgery that requires the removal of excess skin and tissue, scars are necessary. Initially they are pinkish in colour, but over time and with proper care (such as the use of silicone sheeting and sun protection), they tend to fade until they become much less noticeable.
It is important to remember that these incisions are what make it possible to achieve a firm, symmetrical and lifted breast, eliminating weight and physical discomfort; a result that amply compensates for the presence of the scar.
