Body lift

Body lift

Defining your silhouette with precision and balance

Body lift surgery

The body lift is a complete lower body contouring surgery that treats skin excess and flaccidity in a circumferential fashion. It is especially indicated for patients who have experienced major weight loss, either after bariatric surgery or through diet and exercise, and wish to regain a firmer, more functional and proportionate silhouette.

It is important to note that a body lift is not a weight loss surgery. It is indicated when weight is stable (ideally for 6 to 12 months) and the patient maintains healthy lifestyle habits.

What does a body lift correct?

The body lift improves aesthetic and functional changes that cannot be solved with diet or exercise, especially after massive weight loss. This procedure is indicated to correct:

360° skin folds, with sagging of the pubic area, buttocks and lateral aspect of the thigh.

Excess skin on the flanks and lumbar region, with a poorly defined waistline.

Functional discomfort, such as difficulty in hygiene, skin irritation due to rubbing or problems with dressing.

Preoperative planning

The success of the body lift depends to a large extent on correct preoperative planning and optimisation. Before surgery, the following factors are assessed:

Weight

Weight should remain stable for 6-12 months, plus nutritional control (albumin, iron, vitamins).

Tobacco

Stop smoking at least 4 weeks before and after surgery.

Planning

It is important to create a staged plan when the extent of surgery requires it.

Liposuction

An individualised decision is made regarding associated liposuction, if indicated.

Types and variants of body lifts

There are different surgical variants which are selected according to the degree of skin flaccidity, the distribution of the excess skin and the needs of the patient. At HC Aesthetic, the indication is personalised after a specialised assessment.

Lower body lift (belt lipectomy)

It consists of a lower circumferential surgery that combines an extended abdominoplasty with a lift of the buttocks and lateral thigh, achieving a complete contouring of the lower body.

Fleur-de-lis (less common)

This procedure adds a vertical component to the abdomen to treat large excess transverse skin. It involves an anterior inverted T-shaped scar and is used only in very selected cases.

Upper body lift (second stage)

It is indicated to treat dorsal and axillary folds and can be combined with mastopexy or breast reduction procedures. Generally performed in a second surgical stage when appropriate.

Limitations of body lift

    • It does not treat intra-abdominal/visceral fat.
    • In cases of badly damaged skin (post-bariatric surgery) some residual laxity may persist.
    • It involves long scars: this is the consequence of 360° tightening. We work towards an ideal (low) location and monitor the evolution to achieve the best possible result.

What to expect after a body lift

After a body lift, the recovery process, scar care and the maintenance of healthy habits are key aspects to achieve an optimal and long-lasting result.

    • Hospital stay: 2-3 nights, depending on progress.
    • Pain and swelling: managed with prescribed analgesia.
    • Early mobilisation: from the first few hours, in a slightly flexed position.
    • Drains: for 48-72 hours (sometimes longer if debit persists).
    • Use of compression garment: for 6-8 weeks.
    • Lymphatic drainage or manual massages: to be started after 5-7 days, depending on progress (8-12 sessions usually).
    • Return to work: 3-4 weeks for office-based jobs.
    • Physical activity: light cardio at 4-6 weeks. Strength or impact exercises after 8-10 weeks.
    • Results: visible immediately, with final results being noticeable after 6 to 12 months.

To maintain the results of the body lift in the long term, it is essential to keep a stable weight and adopt healthy lifestyle habits.

Adequate nutrition, good hydration and regular exercise help to preserve the achieved body contour. Large fluctuations in weight can deteriorate the result, even after a well-performed surgery.

Body lifts involve scarring. Our goal is always to keep them as low, symmetrical and discreet as possible.

    • Low circumferential scar, at the line of the underwear, from one hip to the other in front and continuing down the lumbar region.
    • In the Fleur-de-lis technique, a vertical median scar is added on the abdomen.
    • We follow specific scar care protocols, including medical grade silicones and photoprotection for at least 12 months.

A body lift is a safe surgical procedure. However, rare complications may occur:

    • Seroma, haematoma or infection, as well as occasional dehiscence, especially in areas of increased tension.
    • Hypertrophic or widened scars and minor contour irregularities.
    • Thrombosis, prevented through individualised prophylaxis.
    • Transient sensory changes.
    • In the Fleur-de-lis technique, a higher risk of visible scarring in the midline.

Frequently asked questions about body lift

Your safety and peace of mind are our top priority. In this section we answer the most common questions that arise before undergoing a body lift, so that you can take the next step with complete confidence and fully informed:

This depends on the extent of the excess skin and the patient’s overall health. In a Lower Body Lift, it is usual to operate on the abdomen, buttocks and flanks in a single surgical procedure. However, in high-risk cases or when excess tissue is very severe, the surgeon may recommend splitting the procedure into two stages to ensure maximum safety.

If the patient also requires an Upper Body Lift to treat the arms and torso, this procedure is planned as a second stage, with at least a 6-month window to ensure that the body has fully recovered from the first surgery.

It is important to understand that the Body Lift is not a weight loss technique, but rather a reconstructive and body contouring surgery. Although considerable amounts of skin and fat are removed (which may reflect a slight reduction in weight), the main goal is to reshape, tighten and harmonise the silhouette.

Our aim is to restore the proportion and functionality of the body after major weight loss, eliminating the physical and aesthetic limitations caused by excess skin.

    Liposuction

    Liposuction and Liposculpture

Feel confident in your body again

    Liposuction surgery

Liposuction is one of the most advanced and precise techniques in plastic surgery, specifically designed to remove localised fat deposits that persist despite maintaining a balanced diet and exercising regularly. Its primary aim is not weight reduction, but the sculpting of the body contour, restoring harmony and definition to problem areas that do not respond to conventional methods.

It is not a procedure intended to treat visceral or intra-abdominal fat, nor is it a solution for obesity. Therefore, the most satisfactory and dramatic results are achieved in patients who have a stable weight.

At HC Aesthetic, we understand that successful results depend on combining a refined surgical technique with the maintenance of healthy habits, ensuring that the new figure remains defined and balanced over time.

    Who is liposuction recommended for?

Liposuction is indicated for patients whose weight is close to their target weight, who have maintained a stable weight for at least 3 to 6 months, have good skin elasticity and have realistic expectations regarding the results.

Localised fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise.

Gynaecomastia in men, in cases of excess fat or a mixed component.

As a complement to abdominoplasty or other post-bariatric surgeries.

Uneven body contours in areas such as the abdomen, flanks, back, love handles, thighs, knees, arms, chin or ankles.

360° liposuction, indicated when seeking overall harmony of the abdominal and lumbar contours.

Lipoedema, in cases where surgical intervention is appropriate and following a specialist assessment.

    Personalised liposuction

Each liposuction is approached in a completely personalised fashion, based on an individualised assessment of the patient.

    • Complete medical history, usual medication and habits (tobacco, anticoagulants, etc.).
    • Physical examination and marking in a standing position, defining the areas to be treated and skin retraction vectors.
    • Medical photography and detailed explanation of the real benefits and limitations of the procedure.
    • Recommendation of target weight and maintenance guidelines through diet and exercise.
    • Identification of recipient areas in cases where fat transfer or lipofilling is indicated.

What areas are treated with liposuction?

Liposuction enables the treatment of localised accumulations of fat in different areas of the body, provided that there is an appropriate indication and the goal is to improve the body contour in a balanced and natural way.

      • Abdomen and flanks, to define the waist and improve the abdominal profile.
      • Upper and lower back, including the dorsal folds and the bra area.
      • Love handles and hips, very common in women.
      • Inner and outer thighs, improving proportion and reducing friction between legs.
      • Knees, especially on the inner side.
      • Arms, in cases of localised fat accumulation.
      • Double chin, to define the cervicofacial angle.
      • Ankles, when there is localised fat accumulation.
    Cirugía de liposucción

    Liposuction techniques and available technologies

At HC Aesthetic, the choice of liposuction technique is made on an individual basis, taking into account the patient’s anatomy, aesthetic goals and, above all, safety. We always prioritise a natural and harmonious result, avoiding artificial markings.

    Tumescent liposuction

A tumescent solution (serum, anaesthetic and vasoconstrictor) is infiltrated and the fat is aspirated using fine cannulas.

It allows excellent volume control, thus favouring a fast and safe postoperative recovery.

    PAL - MicroAire

The cannula performs a gentle oscillation that facilitates a more homogeneous extraction, with less trauma to the tissues.

Especially useful in fibrous areas (such as revision procedures, back or gynaecomastia) and for precise contouring.

    VASER (ultrasound)

This technique selectively emulsifies the fat prior to aspiration. In selected cases, it can offer advantages such as greater contour definition, less bleeding and better skin retraction.

It is indicated for high-definition liposuction when the skin permits.

    What to expect after liposuction

After liposuction, each patient undergoes an individual recovery process, in which medical follow-up, proper care and the adoption of healthy habits are essential for optimal and long-lasting results.

      • Hospital stay: day case or 24 hours depending on volume and areas.
      • Pain/swelling: maximum 48-72 hours. Progressive improvement.
      • Bruising: usually lasting 2 to 3 weeks.
      • Compression garment: continuous compression for 4 to 6 weeks (only treated areas; never compress grafts).
      • Massage (lymphatic drainage/manual): we usually recommend around 10 sessions, starting at 48-72 hours or in accordance with progress.
      • Return to work: 3 to 7 days following surgery in small areas, and 10 to 14 days in extensive liposuction.
      • Physical activity: walking from the first day. Gentle cardio after 2-3 weeks. Strength/impact exercise after 4-6 weeks.
      • Results: instantly visible, but definitive results are seen after 3-6 months (up to 6-12 months for all the normal fibrosis of the process to soften.

The number of adipocytes in the treated areas is permanently reduced, but the remaining adipocytes may increase in size if weight is gained. This is why we insist on:

      • Maintaining a stable weight (ideally the target weight already achieved before surgery).
      • Keeping a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity.
      • Proper hydration and skin care to optimise retraction.

Scars in liposuction are minimal (2-4 mm), and are concealed in folds or underwear.

We recommend topical silicone, photoprotection and follow-up for optimal aesthetic evolution.

Although they are infrequent, the following may occur:

      • Haematomas/seromas, infection or thrombosis.
      • Irregularities or slight asymmetries in the body contour, transitory hyperpigmentation of the skin or changes in sensation in the treated area.
      • Skin burns (very rare).
      • In cases of fat transfer, partial fat resorption, cyst formation or fat necrosis may occur. In breast fat transfer, benign calcifications may appear; in such cases, we inform the patient to ensure correct interpretation in future radiological tests.
      • Fat embolism in gluteal graft if fat enters the muscle (prevented with our subcutaneous technique and controls).

    Limitations of liposuction

      • It does not remove intra-abdominal/visceral fat.
      • It does not correct severe excess skin: resection surgeries may be required (abdominoplasty, thigh/arm lift).
      • Cellulite and stretch marks: may improve discreetly, but this is not their specific treatment.
      • Abdominal ‘etching’: only in candidates with a low percentage of fat and good skin quality; we prioritise a natural result.

    Fat transfer (body lipofilling)

We use the fat extracted by liposuction, purify it (decantation/filtration) and inject it in small micro-layers where volume increase or smooth transitions are desired.

      • Buttocks and hips (‘hip dips’): for projection and shape.
      • Breasts: for contour refinements or moderate augmentation.
      • Face and chin, hands, calves.
      • Scar depressions or irregularities.

Some of the grafted fat is naturally reabsorbed. As a reference, approximately 60-80% of the volume is retained after 3-6 months (this varies depending on the area, technique and habits). In large volume increases, a second session may be considered to achieve the desired volume.

Unlike aesthetic medicine products such as hyaluronic acid (resorbable), the patient’s own fat that ‘attaches’ is permanent: once neovascularised, it behaves like the rest of the body’s adipose tissue. This means that it will increase or decrease with changes in weight and age naturally with the other tissues. This is why we recommend maintaining a stable weight to preserve the result over time.

      • Avoid pressure on the grafted area.
      • No smoking, good hydration and nutrition.
      • Compression should only be applied to donor areas; never compress the graft.
      • Avoid local heat/cold and direct massage on the graft in the first few weeks.

We follow a specific safety protocol: exclusively subcutaneous injection, the use of appropriate cannulas, controlled trajectory and continuous movement technique. We avoid the intramuscular plane to minimise the risk of fat embolism.

      Frequently Asked Questions about Liposuction

We resolve your doubts about the procedure in a simple, straightforward way. Here you will find the answers to the most common questions our patients ask us before their consultation:

It is essential to understand that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity or a weight loss method. Its main objective is liposculpture: to reshape the body contour by eliminating localised fat deposits that do not resolve with diet or exercise. Although the silhouette improves significantly and the volume is reduced, weight loss is usually minimal.

Although the change is visible immediately, the final results are visible after 3 to 6 months, once the oedema (swelling) has almost completely subsided. However, the skin continues to retract and adapt to the new contour for up to 6 to 12 months after the operation.

The fat cells (adipocytes) removed during surgery do not regenerate. However, the cells that remain in the area can increase in size if there is a significant weight gain. Maintaining healthy lifestyle habits and a balanced diet is the key to permanent results.

When we perform fat grafting (lipofilling) in the buttocks or breasts, the body naturally reabsorbs part of the fat. Generally, between 60% and 80% of the transferred fat is permanently retained after the third or sixth month. In cases where a very significant volume increase is desired, a second session may be necessary.

In extensive liposculptures or combined procedures, drains are usually placed for 24 to 72 hours. Their function is to evacuate excess fluids, reduce swelling and lower the risk of seromas, speeding up the initial recovery process.

Yes, the use of a compression garment is essential for the first 4 to 6 weeks. This garment is vital to control swelling, reduce the appearance of bruising and, most importantly, help the skin to adhere correctly to the new contour, favouring optimal skin retraction.

High-Definition Liposuction (HD Lipo) is designed to tighten and define the musculature (such as the abdominals). It is recommended for selected patients with firm skin and a low percentage of body fat.

At HC Aesthetic, we always prioritise an athletic and natural outcome, avoiding artificial finishes that do not harmonise with the rest of the body.

      Tummy Tuck & Abdominoplasty

      Restore firmness and confidence

      Tummy Tuck Surgery

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at restoring a firm, flat and toned abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and correcting the abdominal musculature where necessary.

It is important to note that abdominoplasty is not a weight loss treatment. It is indicated for patients with a stable and healthy weight, and aims to improve the shape, firmness and proportion of the abdomen, not to replace eating habits or exercise.

Abdominoplasty is recommended in cases where the abdomen has lost firmness, elasticity or structure. Abdominoplasty is recommended in cases where the abdomen has lost firmness, elasticity or structure. Among the most common situations are: Among the most common situations are:

        • Excess skin and abdominal flaccidity.
        • Diastasis recti (bulging abdomen even in slim patients).
        • Stretch marks located in the lower abdomen.
        • Fat accumulation resistant to diet and exercise.
        • Post-pregnancy changes or major weight loss.
        • The possibility of correcting umbilical or middle hernias in the same procedure.

      A personalised abdominoplasty for you

At HC Aesthetic, abdominoplasty is always planned in a personalised way, adapting the technique to the anatomy, goals and lifestyle of each patient. In the first consultation (free of charge) we review your medical history and perform a complete assessment, which includes:

Evaluation of skin quality, accumulated fat and muscle condition.

Waist and flank assessment to decide whether to combine with liposuction.

Discussion of the most appropriate type of abdominoplasty.

      Types of abdominoplasty surgery

Depending on the patient’s specific needs, there are three surgical approaches to abdominoplasty.

      Full

Removes excess skin and fat from the navel to the pubic area, repositions the navel in a natural position and strengthens the abdominal musculature in cases of diastasis. It also makes it possible to correct hernias and improve or eliminate previous scars.

      Mini abdominoplasty

Mini abdominoplasty is indicated when flaccidity is limited to the lower abdomen. It does not require repositioning of the navel and offers a faster recovery compared to other techniques.

      Extended

Also known as belt abdominoplasty, it is recommended for patients with excess skin and fat that extends to the flanks and lower back, and is especially indicated after massive weight loss.

What to expect after abdominoplasty surgery

After abdominoplasty, the recovery process, the possible risks and the progression of the results are a natural part of the treatment.

The postoperative period is planned to ensure a safe and comfortable recovery, with guidelines that facilitate a gradual return to daily life and optimise the final result of the surgery.

        • Hospital stay: 24-48 hours.
        • Discomfort: controlled with analgesia.
        • Walking: from the first few hours, gently and slightly bent forward.
        • Drains: generally removed after a few days, depending on progress.
        • Postoperative massages: recommended to promote lymphatic drainage, reduce swelling and optimise the final result.
        • Return to work: within 2-4 weeks, depending on the type of surgery.
        • Physical activity: avoid strenuous exercise for 6-8 weeks.
        • Abdominal binder: should be worn during the first month.

From the immediate postoperative period, we focus on the care and treatment of the scar to promote optimal recovery. In abdominoplasty we can use two types of scars:

        • Low horizontal incision: usually from hip to hip, designed to be concealed below the underwear or swimwear.
        • The mini-T incision: allows the scar to be kept low and the abdominal contour to be optimised in selected cases.

If the patient has a previous caesarean scar, this can usually be improved or even replaced with a more aesthetic one during the operation.

Although rare, abdominoplasty surgery may present:

        • Haematomas or seromas.
        • Temporary changes in the sensation of the abdominal skin.
        • More visible scars than usual.
        • Delayed healing in specific areas.

After the surgery, the following results can be noticed:

        • A flatter, firmer and more toned abdomen.
        • Improved posture and reduction of lumbar discomfort in cases of diastasis.
        • A slimmer and more harmonious silhouette, especially when combined with liposuction.
        • In panniculectomy, immediate improvement in mobility, hygiene and daily comfort.

Combined liposuction: an enhancement for the final result

In many cases we combine abdominoplasty with liposuction of the waist, flanks or upper abdomen, which allows for improved definition of the silhouette and a more harmonious result. At HC Aesthetic we use technologies such as VASER or MicroAire (subject to availability) for a more precise contouring.

      Panniculectomy

In some patients, especially after massive weight loss or in cases of morbid obesity, excess skin and fatty tissue in the lower abdomen can form a large abdominal apron (pannus). This excess not only impairs aesthetics, but also limits mobility, makes hygiene difficult and promotes skin problems such as dermatitis, fungal infections or chronic wounds in the folds.

Panniculectomy is a surgery aimed exclusively at eliminating this abdominal apron, improving the patient’s quality of life.

Unlike abdominoplasty, this intervention does not include plication of the abdominal musculature or repositioning of the navel. Its primary goal is functional, although a favourable aesthetic result is often obtained as well.

Furthermore, it may be indicated even in patients who are not yet candidates for a full abdominoplasty due to their weight or health conditions.

      Indications for panniculectomy

        • Large excess of overhanging skin and fat.
        • Hygiene problems or skin lesions in the abdominal fold.
        • Reduced incidence of skin infections and lesions.

      Benefits of panniculectomy

        • Relief of physical discomfort.
        • Greater ease with dressing and movement.
        • Reduced incidence of skin infections and lesions.

        Frequently asked questions about abdominoplasty

For your peace of mind, here are the answers to the most common questions we receive at our Marbella clinic, helping you to resolve the main doubts and to better understand each stage of your transformation:

To ensure optimal results, it is recommended to wait between 6 and 12 months after childbirth. It is essential that the body has regained its stable weight and, if you have chosen to breastfeed, to wait at least 6 months after finishing breastfeeding. This enables the abdominal tissues and skin elasticity to stabilise and hormone levels to return to normal before the abdominoplasty.

It is important to clarify that an abdominoplasty is not a treatment for obesity or a weight loss method. Although excess skin and localised fat (panniculus adiposus) are removed, the measurable weight loss is minimal.

The real benefit is the remodelling of the body contouring, which results in a flatter abdomen and a more defined waistline that cannot be achieved by diet or exercise alone.

Yes, the surgery does not affect the reproductive capacity or the development of the baby.

However, specialists recommend undergoing abdominal dermolipectomy when you are no longer planning to become pregnant in the future. A subsequent pregnancy would stretch the muscles (rectus diastasis) and the skin again, which could compromise or reverse the aesthetic results achieved with the operation.

Body contouring surgery aims to define, reshape and harmonise the silhouette, removing excess skin and fat and improving tissue firmness.

Weight changes, pregnancy, ageing or genetics can cause fat accumulation in specific areas, loss of skin elasticity and muscle flaccidity. These changes do not always respond to diet or exercise, and it is precisely in these cases when surgery can offer an effective and long-lasting solution.

When safe, we may combine different techniques in the same procedure, which allows us to correct several areas in a single surgical process and with only one recovery period.

It is important to point out that body contouring surgery is not a weight-loss method. It is indicated for patients with a stable or near-ideal weight and is intended to improve shape and proportions, not to replace diet or exercise.
