Gynaecomastia surgery
Gynaecomastia is a medical condition characterised by excessive growth of breast tissue in men, affecting the firmness and projection of the chest. This increase in volume can occur unilaterally (in one breast) or bilaterally, and is usually caused by an imbalance between testosterone and oestrogen, or by a localised build-up of fatty tissue that is resistant to weight loss.
Beyond the clinical implications, at HC Aesthetic we understand that gynaecomastia carries a significant emotional burden. It is not merely a cosmetic issue; it is a clinical condition that often affects the patient’s lifestyle, impacting their self-confidence in social, sporting or intimate contexts.
It is important to emphasise that this surgery is not a weight loss method. The best results and greatest definition are achieved when the patient maintains a stable weight and healthy lifestyle habits.
Why does breast enlargement occur?
Breast enlargement in men may be due to multiple factors, which we assess thoroughly. If a hormonal cause is suspected, we recommend preliminary blood tests and the discontinuation of substances that promote glandular growth.
Physiological changes
Common during puberty due to temporary hormonal imbalances.
Pharmacological factors
Use of certain antidepressants, antiandrogens or anabolic steroids.
Metabolic causes
Conditions related to the thyroid, liver or testicular abnormalities.
Genetic or idiopathic
Cases with no clear cause or due to genetic predisposition.
Techniques used to treat gynaecomastia
The aim is to restore a flat, firm and athletic appearance to the chest.
- High-Definition Liposculpture: we use VASER or MicroAire (PAL) technology to remove fat and contour the edges of the pectoral muscles with maximum precision.
- Glandular excision: if there is a solid glandular component, we make a small periareolar incision (in the lower semicircle of the areola) to remove the excess tissue.
- Combined technique: this is the most common approach. We combine liposuction to even out the area with surgical excision to ensure the chest is completely flat.
Who is gynaecomastia surgery suitable for?
Gynaecomastia correction is a permanent solution for men seeking to regain confidence in their physical appearance. This procedure is particularly suitable for:
Persistent breast volume
Men with persistent excess volume in the chest that does not decrease or become more defined despite maintaining a balanced diet and a consistent exercise routine.
Emotional or physical impact
Patients who experience aesthetic self-consciousness that limits their choice of clothing, or who experience physical discomfort due to tissue sensitivity.
Good skin quality
Candidates whose skin retains sufficient elasticity to ensure optimal retraction following the removal of fat or glandular tissue.

What to expect after gynaecomastia surgery
At HC Aesthetic, we support you throughout your recovery to ensure the process is comfortable and safe, and that the results exceed your expectations.
-
- Compression garment: to be worn for 4–6 weeks.
- Drains: for extensive liposculpture procedures, drains may be left in place for 24–48 hours.
- Swelling/bruising: 2–3 weeks.
- Return to work: 5–7 days for office-based work.
- Physical activity: light cardio can be resumed after 2 weeks. Chest and arm exercises after 4–6 weeks.
- Massages/lymphatic drainage: 3–7 days after surgery, if recommended by our medical team.
The liposuction incisions are small, pinpoint incisions (2–3 mm), while the periareolar incision blends into the natural change in skin colour, becoming almost imperceptible once the scar has healed (12 months).
To ensure optimal healing of the scars, we prescribe a specific aftercare protocol:
-
- Silicone treatment: Use of medical-grade silicone gels or sheets to promote flat, supple scars.
- Strict sun protection: It is vital to avoid direct sun exposure to the area for the first 12 months.
Although complications are rare, the following may occur:
-
- Haematomas (the most common) and seromas (managed with drains and a compression garment).
- Temporary changes in nipple sensation.
- Irregularities: we avoid the ‘sunken areola’ effect by always combining glandular excision with liposuction to achieve a smooth, even contour.
The change in contour is immediately visible. However, the final result settles over 3 to 6 months, once the swelling has subsided and the skin has completed its retraction process. You will achieve a defined, masculine-looking chest that is in harmony with your natural physique.

Frequently asked questions about gynaecomastia
To help you better understand the benefits and procedure involved, we have prepared this quick guide with answers to the key questions our patients usually ask us:
Yes, provided the patient maintains a stable weight and avoids substances that disrupt the hormonal system (such as anabolic steroids). Once the glandular tissue and fat have been removed, the breast should not enlarge again.
We aim for maximum discretion. By placing the incision right at the lower edge of the areola, where the skin tone changes, the scar tends to fade until it becomes practically invisible after the first year.
Most patients describe the sensation as ‘intense muscle soreness’ or tightness. The discomfort is generally very manageable and can be controlled with the pain medication prescribed for you when you are discharged.
